How to pay car tax

There are a number of different ways in which you can purchase or renew your car tax and, these are:

Online

You can pay road tax online by visiting https://vehicletax.service.gov.uk/ and entering your details and the details of your vehicle (make sure you have these to hand before beginning).

Direct Debit

You can set up a Direct Debit for your car tax HERE.  Note that if you choose to pay monthly or every six months, you will be subject to a 5% surcharge.

The Post Office

Although some may consider this option a little old school, it can be convenient for those who don’t feel confident making payments online.  In order to renew your car tax at the Post Office, you’ll first need to check that your local office offers the service. If so, you’ll need to take along either a V11 DVLA reminder or a V5C registration document for the vehicle as well as a valid MOT certificate.  You can find your nearest applicable Post Office HERE.

By telephone

Another more traditional method of paying your road tax is by phone – you can do this by calling the DVLA on 0300 123 4321, making sure that you have all your paperwork handy.
